Attention: open in a new window.  E-mail

Stacey_Lynn_BrownRaise the Red Tent celebrates the work of female poets--that means if you identify as female, we encourage you to come and read two of your own poems on our open mic--if not, feel free to read one of your own, after you've read one of your favorites by a woman.  After the open, Stacey Lynn Brown features.  A poet, playwright, and essayist, Brown's work has appeared in various literary journals and anthologies. Her book-length poem in sections, Cradle Song, was published by C&R Press in January 2009. Poems from Cradle Song  have won awards from The Poetry Center of Chicago and have been nominated for a Pushcart Prize, and the collection was featured in a spotlight interview on the National Book Critics Circle blog.  She is an assistant professor of creative writing at Southern Illinois University in Edwardsville, where she lives with her husband, poet Adrian Matejka, and their daughter.

We are thrilled to present Atlanta, GA, native Stacey Lynn Brown to our New York audience. Of her book, Cradle Song, Major Jackson writes, “The complicated inheritances of race relations, Southern identity, white superiority, and unheralded bonds between black and white folk are explored in this brutally candid sequence of poems that unflinchingly elevates and portraits Gaither’s humanity, pain and struggle into the realm of folklore.”  The Raise the Red Tent series celebrates the work of women writers--if you identify as a woman, you can read two of your own poems on the open mic, and if not, you’ll read a poem by someone who does before you read your own. Poems will be provided in house, but we encourage you to bring your own!  As always, the open mic sign up is at 7:00 sharp.

Have we got a great prize for you this evening! The winner of tonight's slam will not only earn points towards semi-finals, but they will also receive free passes to Saturday and Sunday events at the Dodge Poetry Festival, October 9-10, in Newark, NJ.

One of the poets performing at the Dodge Poetry festival is our feature, Oliver de la Paz --he has one of the most beautiful reading voices we’ve ever heard.  Author of 3 gorgeous books, de la Paz co-chairs the advisory board of Kundiman and teaches at Western Washington University. Of his newest book, Requiem for the Orchard, Aimee Nezhukumatathil says, “It is impossible to return to the safe territory of the person you were before you read these achingly beautiful poems filled with terror and gracenotes.” Mobile Libris will be on hand to sell his books.  Open slam to follow. Come and be changed.
